I am San Jose’s intent is to revitalize and reactivate the downtown area with initial emphasis on St James Park. To coordinate a series of events year round that will bring not only an economic boost but a social rejuvenation to an area of the city that has long needed it. We look to expand from St James Park to other parts of the city and other parks as well. We want the community to once again be excited about the parks and the city as a whole. That great events can be put together that can benefit great causes and that we can put events together that will be exciting, fun and yet be beneficial for everyone – to really make steps to solve problems.

Zipcar Comes To Downtown San Jose

Great News for 88′ers and downtown San Jose urban dwellers! It’s now easier than ever to get where you want to go, when you want to get there. Zipcar has officially launched in the San Jose market with 12 Zipcars in 6 locations downtown (see below). The new nearby amenity adds an element of livability and freedom to those who opt for a car-free lifestyle. San Jose continues to get more connected, walkable, bike friendly and now one can truly live car-free with Zipcar just steps away.

How does it work?
Users pay a sign-up fee of $25, an annual fee of $60, and then an hourly or daily fee that includes 180 miles of driving, gas and insurance. Hourly fees start at $8, and daily fees at $70. Then members can reserve cars in any market.

Farmers’ Market Returns to Downtown San Jose

It’s hard to beat the experience of a Farmers’ Market….the sights, the smells and colors are all a welcome escape from our daily, hectic lives. That is why we are excited that the Downtown San Jose Farmers’ Market has returned to San Pedro Square for the 2012 season. The friendly outdoor market takes place each Friday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. along a picturesque block of San Pedro Street between Santa Clara and St. John streets. The market season starts on May 4 and runs through November 16.

The 5th annual Target Summer Pops Music Festival Returns!

Symphony Silicon Valley presents the 5th annual Target Summer Pops Music Festival — a fun, festive and totally FREE music festival presented outdoors under the palm trees at San Jose State University July 28-August 3!

Bring a picnic and a blanket or your low lawn chairs and join us for five warm evenings of grand music.
Picnics on the lawn, free ice cream and warm summer evenings filled with great music are just a short walk from your front door at The 88. Last summer the festival drew over 16,000 listeners of all ages!

This year’s festival opens on Saturday with the Symphony orchestra performing an evening of best-loved classics, including excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Mozart’s A Little Night Music and much more. For Sunday’s Target Family Concert, the orchestra will conjure up the magical, musical stories that enchant every kid. The second week of the Festival kicks off on Friday with an evening of irresistible Latin jazz performed by legendary clarinetist and 9-time Grammy winner Paquito D’Rivera with his Quintet. On Saturday Broadway diva Christine Andreas returns, joining the orchestra in romantic songs drawn from the Great American Songbook; and the Festival closes on Sunday with a concert of Americana classics such as the Liberty Bell March, plus orchestra favorites from Aaron Copland to Artie Shaw.

BART extension to San Jose getting $250 million in federal funds — more than expected!

The Valley Transportation Authority announced Monday, April 9 that it will receive $100 million in federal funds for the current fiscal year as soon as an agreement with the Federal Transit Administration is signed March 12. And for the fiscal year beginning in October, the budget President Barack Obama released Monday calls for an additional $150 million for the 10-mile, $2.1 billion line from Fremont to the Berryessa area of San Jose. That’s $20 million more than what local officials had originally estimated they would get annually.

“This money is rock-solid,” said Randy Rentschler of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. “This is really good news.”

Construction is expected to begin this summer, and with groundbreaking set for April 12 trains could begin running in late 2016.
