You are invited to “Let’s Get Moving! Silicon Valley Transportation Choices and Healthy Communities Summit” on February 23rd from 9-4 in San Jose. Let’s Get Moving Silicon Valley is a day-long gathering of community residents, leaders, and activists interested in creating better-connected, affordable, and healthy communities in Santa Clara County and beyond.

The Summit will feature interactive workshops on creating better transportation options and more accessible communities.

The interactive workshops and trainings will provide you opportunities to connect with activists and organizations from across the Bay Area. Find out about the transportation and land use plans and proposals taking place across the County and how you can effectively participate and get involved.

World’s Fastest Growing Economies – San Jose Made The List

We have highlighted a number of studies that place San Jose’s economy as one of the best in the region and nation. Now it seems that San Jose also competes globally with regards to fastest-growing economies. A report compiled by the Metropolitan Policy Program at the D.C.-based Brookings Institution, found that San Jose ranked among the 60 fastest-growing metro economies worldwide.

No Small Feat – Only four metropolitan areas in all of North America placed in the upper tier of the new report. The report was recently reported by the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Some of the reason’s San Jose ranked were stronger economic indicators. From the SVBJ article:

From 2011 to 2012, employment in the San Jose metro area increased by 2.7 percent as real GDP per capita also rose by 2.8 percent.

Other variables factored in included population – San Jose’s metro area registered nearly 1.9 million people – and nominal GDP.

Global Player. Most of the top ranks were dominated by Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. San Jose ranked No. 46 out of 60, which is impressive considering the region recently experienced a major recession.

San Jose knows the way – to No. 1

Tech is back, especially in the world’s best-known hub of innovation. According to The Milken Institute, the best-performing metro area in America is San Jose.

What does ‘Best Performing’ mean, exactly?
The Best-Performing Cities index includes measures of job, wage, and technology performance to rank the nation’s 200 large metropolitan areas and 179 smaller metros. Unlike other “best places” rankings, it does not use quality-of-life metrics, such as commute times or housing costs. In the Institute’s index, employment growth is weighted most heavily due to its critical importance to community vitality. Wage and salary growth measures the quality of jobs created and sustained.

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., vaulted 50 spots from last year to No. 1, a position it last held on the index in 2001. San Jose’s recovery has spread through the region’s economy: For each job added in the tech sector, five jobs are created in other industries. For example, Apple has an estimated 34,000 employees in the metro area but is responsible for another 170,000 jobs in the region.

“People expect tech to be one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy, and it was,” says Ross DeVol, chief research officer of the Milken Institute and one of the report’s authors. “A perhaps less expected highlight of this year’s rankings is how the national resurgence in manufacturing is reflected in the greatly improved fortune of local economies, especially in the upper Midwest.”

If she doesn’t know the answer to a tenant’s question off the top of her head, she can usually pull it from Google in less than a minute.

“I pride myself on being able to deliver specials and discounts to my homeowners,” she said.

‘She’s also an ace at all things San Jose, especially those obscure historical tidbits she’ll sometimes feature in San Jose trivia contests for residents. She was born in San Jose and grew up in Willow Glen. Her father had a dental practice in downtown San Jose.”
